96 World Cup Champion Sri Lankan team to play match again


True Sri Lankan brand of the cricket will be showcased at the NCC grounds as the ‘1996 Cricket World Champions reunite to play a match in aid of the Baby Cheramy Big Heart Project, on Saturday, January 12. The T20 match will be a public fundraiser for the ‘Nana Diriya’ programme which is a beneficiary of Baby Cheramy’s big heart project.

 “It is wonderful to reunite with the team again, after almost 17 years” said Roshan Mahanama, a member of the 96 champion's team and the honorary ambassador of Big Heart project. Mahanama said this in front of a packed media gathering at the Victorian, Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo, on Tuesday.
Tickets are now available at NCC grounds and will be sold to the general public at 50.00 rupees each. All proceeds from the event, including sponsorships and sale of memorabilia, will be diverted towards the Big Heart Project to support of ‘Nana Diriya’ programme.
Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka's only skipper who lifted a World Cup, said that he and his former colleagues had no hesitation in agreeing to a charity of this nature.
"Despite not being publicized, It's no secret that most of my colleagues are helping the under privileged children in this country. However, I felt this is a time that we should do something again as a team"
"Like we won the World Cup 17 years ago" Ranatunga said.
Baby Cheramy's Big Heart Project, launched by Hemas Holdings PLC, in association with Department of Probation and Child care services, has selected 50 children who need a helping hand to continue with their studies. The project has already made arrangement to donate 2000.00 rupees per child, in each month, starting from October 2012 up to December 2016.
Out the grant, 1,500.00 rupees will be given for their day-to-day needs and and 500.00 will be deposited to a bank account, belongs to each child.
In addition to the financial donation, Baby Cheramy has also made necessary arrangements to collect other necessary things for their education, such as stationery, by their Big Heart Truck currently touring over the country.
Yamuna Perera, Commissioner of Department of probation and child care services, said that those who want to contribute to the cause, there is a dedicated bank account is available for ‘Nana Diriya' Programme through ‘Sevana Sarana Foster Parent Scheme’. The account number is 174-1-001-1-9026268 at Peoples Bank.
"We know, in general, most of the people are reluctant to work hand in hand with government organizations or ministries. But here, we do this with maximum transparency"
